A dead animal smell in the wall or ceiling

A smell that shows up suddenly, gets worse over a few days and stays in one part of the house is usually an animal that died in a wall, a ceiling or a crawl space.

Signs it is a dead animal

  • The smell is strongest in one room or along one wall
  • Flies gather at a vent, a light fixture or the ceiling
  • A noise you heard in the wall stopped a few days before
  • A stain appears on a ceiling or a wall

How we find it

We follow the smell, the flies and any staining, and we try the attic, the crawl space and the vents before opening anything. If a wall or ceiling has to be opened, we tell you first and keep the hole as small as we can.

How long the smell lasts

Once the animal is out and the spot is cleaned, the smell fades over the next few days. How long depends on the size of the animal and how long it was there.

Stopping it happening again

An animal that died inside got in somewhere. We show you the opening so it can be closed.
