What you are dealing with

What you can see is usually part of it.

Paper wasps hang open nests under eaves, railings and grill covers. Bald-faced hornets build a large gray ball in a tree or under an overhang. Yellow jackets nest in the ground or inside a wall, and they are the ones most likely to sting.

We find the nest, work out what is building it and take it down. If they turn out to be honey bees, we tell you and point you to a beekeeper.

Any of these help us work out what is in there.

  • Wasps flying in and out of one spot
  • A gray paper nest under an eave, a railing or the deck
  • Yellow jackets going into a hole in the lawn
  • Insects going into a gap in the siding
  • A buzzing sound inside a wall

The scope

What we look at, and what the job usually involves.

What we inspect

  1. Eaves, railings, shutters and the underside of the deck
  2. Holes in the lawn and garden beds
  3. Gaps in the siding and around vents
  4. Sheds, play sets and grill covers

What the work may include

  1. Identifying the insect
  2. Removing the nest
  3. Dealing with nests in the ground or inside a wall
  4. Pointing you to a beekeeper for honey bees

What happens next

How the job runs.

  1. Find the nest

We follow the flight path to the nest and see what kind of insect it is.

  2. Take it down

We remove wasp, hornet and yellow jacket nests we can reach, including ones in the ground.

  3. Show you the spot

We point out the gap or overhang they used, so it can be closed.

Price and timing

What changes the price.

Nests grow all summer and are biggest and busiest in late summer. A nest found early in the season is smaller and easier to take down.

  • The kind of insect
  • How high the nest is
  • In the open, in the ground or inside a wall
  • How big it has grown

Questions people ask

What to know about wasp & hornet nest removal.

Do you remove honey bees?

Honey bees are moved by beekeepers. If we find honey bees, we will tell you and point you to one.

Can I knock the nest down myself?

We do not recommend it. Hornets and yellow jackets defend the nest, and a ground nest can hold hundreds of insects.

Will they come back next year?

They do not reuse an old nest, but a sheltered spot can draw a new queen in spring. Closing the gap they used helps.
