What you are dealing with

What you can see is usually part of it.

Opossums look for a dry, dark place to sleep during the day: under a porch or deck, in a garage or shed, or in a crawl space. They come out after dark to eat whatever is left out, from pet food to fallen fruit.

They do not dig much, so they use openings that are already there. Most of the job is finding that gap and closing it once the opossum is gone.

Any of these help us work out what is in there.

  • Something moving under the porch or deck at night
  • Pet food bowls emptied overnight
  • Droppings in the garage or the crawl space
  • An opossum walking the fence line after dark
  • A smell under the house if one has died there

The scope

What we look at, and what the job usually involves.

What we inspect

  1. Under porches, decks and back steps
  2. The garage, the shed and the crawl space
  3. Gaps at the foundation and under additions
  4. Pet food, compost and fallen fruit that draw it in

What the work may include

  1. Finding the opossum's daytime spot
  2. Trapping it and taking it away
  3. Checking for young in spring and summer
  4. Screening or sealing the opening

What happens next

How the job runs.

  1. Find where it sleeps

We look under porches, decks and sheds, and in the garage and crawl space, for the spot it uses in the day.

  2. Trap it

We set a trap on its path and check it, so it is not left sitting in it.

  3. Close the gap

Once it is out we screen or seal the opening so the next one cannot move in.

Price and timing

What changes the price.

Most opossums are caught within a few nights, though some take longer. We tell you how often we will come back to check the trap.

  • Where it is living
  • Whether there are young
  • How many trap checks it takes
  • How much screening the opening needs

Questions people ask

What to know about opossum removal.

Is an opossum dangerous to my dog or cat?

Opossums avoid fights. A cornered one hisses and shows its teeth, and it may bite a dog that keeps at it. Keep pets in at night until it is gone.

Can you get an opossum out of my garage?

Yes. We trap it and close the gap it used, often under the door or at the bottom of a wall.

Will another one move in?

Not if the opening is closed. Left open, the same space draws the next opossum.
